Peloton Won't Turn On? Complete Power Troubleshooting Guide

Quick Answer: If your Peloton won't turn on, the fix is usually simpler than you think. Start by checking the power cable connections — there are multiple points where the cable can come loose. For the Bike+, unplug the power adapter and wait up to 10 minutes for the white indicator light to fully dissipate before reconnecting. If that doesn't work, try a static discharge reset by holding Power + Volume Up for 60 seconds while fully unplugged.

First: Is It the Bike or the Screen?

Before troubleshooting, figure out what's actually not working:

  • Screen is completely dark with no backlight — This is a power delivery problem. The screen isn't receiving electricity. Follow the checks below.
  • Screen has a backlight (slightly illuminated) but shows nothing — Power is reaching the screen, but it's stuck during boot. See our black screen boot loop guide instead.
  • Screen shows the Peloton logo then goes white/flashing — This is the white screen of death, a different issue.

Also check the power indicator light on the power cable near where it plugs into the bike. If this light is on, power is reaching the bike — the problem is between the bike and the screen.

Check 1: Power Outlet

Start with the obvious:

Step 1: Plug a phone charger or lamp into the same outlet to verify it works.

Step 2: If using a power strip or surge protector, try plugging directly into the wall outlet.

Step 3: Try a different outlet entirely — some outlets are controlled by wall switches.

Step 4: Check if a breaker has tripped in your electrical panel.

Check 2: Power Cable Connections

The Peloton power path has multiple connection points, and any one of them can come loose — especially after moving the bike or vacuuming around it.

Step 1: Wall to adapter — Make sure the cable is fully seated in the power adapter brick and the wall outlet.

Step 2: Adapter to bike — Follow the cable from the adapter to where it connects at the back/bottom of the bike frame. Push it in firmly. On the Bike+, this is near the rear stabilizer.

Step 3: Bike to screen — The internal cable that runs from the bike frame up to the tablet can wiggle loose over time, especially from riding vibration. Check where cables connect behind/below the screen. For details on each cable, see our Peloton USB-C port guide.

Step 4: Inspect cables for visible damage — fraying, kinks, or bent connectors.

Check 3: Power Adapter Reset (Bike+)

The Bike+ has a specific power adapter behavior that catches many people off guard.

Step 1: Unplug the power cable from the Bike+ and from the wall outlet.

Step 2: Look at the power adapter — it has a small white indicator light. Wait until this light fully dissipates. This can take up to 5-10 minutes. Don't rush it.

Step 3: Once the light is completely off, plug the cable back into the wall first, then into the Bike+.

Step 4: Press the power button on the screen.

This power adapter reset resolves a surprising number of "Bike+ won't turn on" cases. The adapter has internal protection circuitry that can get stuck in a fault state.

Check 4: Static Discharge Reset

Built-up static electricity can confuse the tablet's power regulation circuits, preventing it from starting. This is especially common on bikes that sat unused for a while.

Step 1: Unplug the power cord from the wall and from the bike.

Step 2: Unplug both cables from the back of the screen/tablet (power cable and data cable).

Step 3: With everything disconnected, press and hold the Power button and Volume Up button simultaneously for 60 full seconds. Use a timer.

Step 4: Reconnect the cables to the screen first, then plug the bike back into the wall.

Step 5: Press the power button. The boot may take 2-3 minutes — be patient.

This method works for roughly 60% of no-power cases on previously unused or second-hand bikes.

Check 5: Screen and Data Cables

If the bike has power (indicator light on) but the screen stays dark:

Step 1: Gently check the cable connections behind the screen. On the original Bike, there are connectors accessible by slightly tilting the screen. On the Bike+, connections are behind the display.

Step 2: Unplug and reseat each cable firmly. A cable can look connected but not be fully seated.

Step 3: On the Bike+, check the sensor assembly near the brake area — a known failure point that can prevent the screen from receiving power.

Step 4: Try connecting the screen to power directly (bypassing the bike) if possible, to isolate whether it's the screen or the bike frame wiring.

When to Contact Peloton Support

Contact Peloton if: - You've tried all five checks above and the bike still won't power on - The power cable or adapter is visibly damaged - You smell burning or see scorch marks on any connector - The screen powers on but immediately shuts off repeatedly - Your bike is still under warranty (12 months from delivery)

Replacement Power Cables

If your cable is damaged, use official Peloton replacement cables from onepeloton.com/shop/replacement-parts. Cheap third-party power adapters may not match the voltage and amperage specifications, which can damage your bike's electronics or create safety hazards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won't my Peloton turn on after sitting unused?

Bikes that sit unpowered for weeks or months can develop static charge buildup and battery drain in the tablet. The static discharge reset (Check 4 above) addresses this. If that doesn't work, plug it in and leave it for 24 hours — the internal battery may need to charge before the tablet can boot.

Is there a reset button on a Peloton?

There's no physical reset button. The power button on the tablet screen serves as both the on/off switch and (when combined with volume buttons) the recovery mode trigger. See our factory reset guide for full reset procedures.

Can a power surge damage my Peloton?

Yes. A power surge can damage the power adapter, the internal electronics, or the screen. Using a surge protector is recommended. If your area experiences frequent power fluctuations, consider an uninterruptible power supply (UPS).

My Peloton screen turns on but shows nothing — is that different?

Yes. If the backlight is on (the screen glows slightly), power is reaching the screen but the system isn't booting properly. That's a software issue, not a power issue. See our guides for the black screen boot loop or white screen of death.

How much does a Peloton power cable replacement cost?

Official Peloton replacement power cables cost around $30-$50 from the Peloton website. Third-party cables are cheaper but not recommended — incorrect voltage or amperage can damage electronics or pose safety risks.

Can I use any USB-C cable to power the Peloton screen?

No. The Peloton's USB-C connection uses a specific data cable with all pins wired. Standard phone charging cables often lack the data pins and won't work. Always use Peloton-original cables for the internal connections.

Will Peloton replace my screen for free if it won't turn on?

If your Peloton is within the 12-month warranty period, Peloton will typically replace faulty hardware at no cost. Out-of-warranty, screen replacements cost $350-$700. Check our screen replacement guide for all your options.

My Bike+ power light is on but the screen is dead — what now?

If the power indicator light on the cable is lit but the screen is completely dark, the problem is between the bike frame and the screen. Check the internal cable connections (Check 5), try the power adapter reset (Check 3), and reseat all cables behind the screen.

How do I know if my Peloton tablet is dead vs just won't boot?

Try entering Recovery Mode by holding Power + Volume Up. If you see the Android Recovery menu, the tablet is alive — it's a software issue. If nothing happens at all (no backlight, no logo, no response), the tablet or its power connection may have failed.
