ERG Mode Instructions
ERG Mode (Constant Power)
Bike+ Only. Use ERG mode to maintain a constant power output regardless of your cadence. The bike will automatically adjust resistance to keep you at your target wattage.
What is ERG Mode?
ERG mode (short for "ergometer") is a training feature that automatically adjusts your bike's resistance to maintain a specific power output (measured in watts). If you pedal slower, resistance increases. If you pedal faster, resistance decreases. This keeps your power output constant, making it ideal for structured workouts and interval training.
Step 1: Open ERG Controls
From any app with the FitSwitch overlay visible, look at the metrics bar at the bottom of the screen. You'll see your current power output displayed.
Tap on the power/output reading to open the ERG mode control panel.
The metrics bar showing Output (75W) - tap this value to open ERG controls
Step 2: Set Your Target Wattage
Once the ERG control panel opens, you'll see:
- Target wattage display - Shows your current target (e.g., "72" watts)
- Minus (-) button - Decrease target wattage
- Plus (+) button - Increase target wattage
- Green checkmark (✓) - Confirm and close the control panel
- Red X - Exit ERG mode entirely
ERG control panel - use +/- to adjust target, checkmark to confirm, X to exit ERG mode
Use the + and - buttons to adjust your target wattage to your desired level.
Step 3: Confirm or Exit
- To confirm and close: Tap the green checkmark (✓). The control panel will close and ERG mode will maintain your target wattage.
- To exit ERG mode: Tap the red X. This disables ERG mode and returns to normal resistance control.
Tips for Using ERG Mode
- Start conservatively: Begin with a lower target wattage and increase as you warm up.
- Maintain steady cadence: While ERG adjusts for you, keeping a consistent cadence (80-100 RPM) feels most natural.
- Watch for "spiral of death": If you slow down too much, resistance increases dramatically. If this happens, exit ERG mode or reduce target wattage.
- Great for intervals: ERG mode is perfect for structured workouts where you need to hit specific power targets.
- Works in any app: ERG mode works while using Zwift, TrainerRoad, Netflix, or any other app with the FitSwitch overlay.
-
Bike + Only: ERG mode works only with the Bike+ and not the Bike which doesn't have the internal motor to automatically adjust resistance.
When to Use ERG Mode
- Structured training workouts with specific power zones
- Interval training (e.g., 3 minutes at 150W, 1 minute at 200W)
- Recovery rides at a consistent easy pace
- FTP tests and fitness assessments
